Where's The Hook?

Saw this video this morning and a friend's blog and well, thought I'd just blog about it. Well, not about the video itself but matters relating to it. Especially how far I am behind times in the progress of music.

A few years back, a friend from Singapore came over to KL. The lady by the name of Lisa, had so much wanted to meet several of her friends here and had taken leave from work especially for the purpose. So on that day she came over, I fetched her from KL Sentral and drove to Hotel Istana where another friend awaits, as he - Radzi, by the name - was attending a conventon there.

After parking the car besides the Kompleks Kewangan building, we walked the short distance to Hotel Istana. Then, out of the blue, she mentioned "Ah, Peter Pan is coming to KL! I love Peter Pan". Hmm...but the thing that went to my mind was "Peter Pan? OK, now they turned it into a musical already!" And we continued to meet Radzi and then adjourned to the mamak shop behind the hotel.

At the mamak shop, Lisa then mentioned the name again but this time to Radzi. And the guy, said he even gotten the tickets already! Deep in my mind I thought "Hullo! I didn't know these 2 are so cultured to be wanting to watch a musical of Peter Pan!"

Look, I grew up knowing Peter Pan as the classical never-wanting-to-grow-up kid of the Neverland. Once you've read the book and seen the movie, do you really need to see the musical? Though its a fairy tale, I like the story and can relate it to Islam as in the hereafter - insyAllah when I make it to Heaven - we will all be at our prime age and not growing old at all. Skewed or not, that's the way I see it. But a musical?

Well, turned out to be I was totally embarrassed that day when I found out that the 2 friends were referring to the Indonesian band. Hmm....malu! But, neber mind, too can come up with the same. If Peter Pan is a band now, my Hook was one way before.

Assallamualaikum,
What a laugh. I was eager to read about Peterpan but you on the hand were reffering to "Hook". You really know how to make a joke. BTW, it is not too late for you to get into the mood of some other Indonesian Band, e.g. Padi, Jamrud and Dewa to name a few. They are real entertainers.
Wassallam

Wa'alaikumusalam snowflake,

Hehe...I knew I'd caught you there :)

Indonesian bands? I don't even know the local bands now! Further, isn't Padi now a scarcity and valuable; and jamrud a gemstone; and Dewa, an idol! U'uh! I won't be caught like I did with Peter Pan lol!

Wa'alaikumusalam Muha my brother,

The good young days...will always remain as such, while we move on with age. I never had anyone read to me, and had to read lots of things all by myslef. Think, many of us do. Your mumma must love you quite a lot.

But hey, if a fairy comes over tonight to take me to the eternal youth of Jannah, I am all willing and ready. Each man there, will have the strength of 100, I read in a hadith. But off course you can discard that as I am very bad at remembering sources. Sigh...

dear cakapje

actually i thought so too when the name peter pan suddenly resurfaced out of nowhere. Just that i didnt talk about it to anyone. Guess, in that respect, im luckier than you. :)

Heard of the group, yeah they are good but funny you know, it seems that all Indonesian bands have the same lead singer. They sound so much alike.
Anyway Shah talking about Hook. I went into youTube and found one that I used to love and the love affair has rekindled thanks to you. Its posted at KTN.

Salam shirzad,

Lol! I bet lots more people thought of it as such. But like you, they just don't want to say it :)

Salam Cikgu,

Yup! I thoroughly have to agree with you there. Even local bands are following suit.

Hey there Peter Pan fans!
There's a new novel coming out!

Unlike all the other prequels and sequels, this one does not contradict Barrie's original stories. In fact, it's based on his idea for continuing Pan's adventure.
Click on my name for the announcement page!

BELIEVE!

Hi

They really can come up with imaginative names for their band, don't they? When I first heard Peter Pan, that was my initial thoughts. I'm sure we're no the only one.

The song on the clip sound catchy and familiar. Nice jazzy tune.

Talking about latest musics, I wonder if you've heard this latest release uploaded at my JR blog. Its a new version of an old song.

Hey, the never fairy,

You have to pull some magic stuff and sprinkle it over your page, because the upload is so slow I might just end up as Rip Van Wrinkle!

cakapaje said...

Salam kerpie,

Hey bro, you forget I'm a jester? I have to pull one of these every now and then to keep up with my name! :)

cakapaje said...

Salam ydiana,

Ever so true. I mean, like here in Malaysia, you get bands with the like Spoon, Periuk and what not; why can't they choose a name as simple as cakapaje? Bet that itself would sell a million! Hmm...I'm dreaming of the royalties already :)

Salam Shah,

salam shah,
betoi shah, dah banyak betoi band lani to keep up with. betoi jugak kata chegu, the lead singers sound alike, like ada sinus gitu.
and for the ladies pulak sekarang ni, suka nyanyi belakang tekak. ala...you know what i mean. the kids hate me when i try to sing bunga lestari's!! agony memang!
i dont let them watch AF except for that one particular time. American Idol, yes. thats when i talk about sound mixing, real talent and choices of songs to them. hmm...my guess, Archuleta is the next idol kot.
sorry shah, panjang dan merapu sikit pulak komen kali ni. thanks shah!

Wa'alaikumusalam Accia,

Secara benar saya nyatakan: panjang lagi pun takpa, cek terhibur :)

Hmm...tu Accia belum dengar saya nyanyi lagi. Ada orang kata, sikit sikit mirip Nat King Cole. Tapi tu dulu dulu le, dan mirip mirip je le :)

one of my fav band...nice songs

Salam mek na,

Er...since you are rather young, I would have to presume you mean Peter Pan. Well, now that I've come to know them, yes, I would have to agree. But, so is Dr Hook :)

Salam bro Shah:

My initial thought was like you too.Peter Pan the Peter Pan and not about PeterPan the band.

I usually got lost whenever the subject of peter Pan or Capt Hook comes out for I was not familiar with it just as I wasn't familiar with Alice in Wonderland.

But treasure Island or Tom sawyer I am familiar.back in the kampung in the late 60s-early 70's, my Tok never knew about Peter Pan so I am more into si tenggang or Batu Belah Batu Bertangkup or Raja Bersiong which tok would narrate to me become going to sleep.

Che'gu is right about the similiarity and 'sameness' of bands(Indonesia and Malysia too). For that reason I prefer GIGI and PADI. Most others are worth listening for 2 albums and then you say bye-bye to them or they'll say bye-bye to you.
But sad to say,I personally think Indonesian composers are more creative than what he got here.

Wa'alaikumusalam Doc,

Hehe...you too were caught by those band names. Worse still for me as at that time - and now - I've given up listening or trying to catch up with music, local or foreign, east or west.

One thing though, I've always believed that Indonesian, The Philippines, and even Thai music are above us - generally - as no matter how westernised or rock they become, they still retain their roots. Further, in a population where the slightest difference can make or break, their talent are inborn or schooled. You tie those 2 together, you get something way above par.
