A Good But Tiring Day.

Hmm...guess the title should say it all :)

Anyway, I was at a friend's place earlier and he was playing some old songs by none other but The Nat King Cole! Now, had the songs played were on compact discs and emanating from a digital players, I would not have thought much about it. But this guy is one of those who is returning back to the era of vinyl record and turntables equipped with a piston amplifier! I mean, that's like wow! And here I am relying on you tubes, imeem and what not available on the net...it makes me feel like a Rip Van Winkle. Then again, maybe I am...Well, at least the stuff from the net are environmental friendly...I hope.

Still, lets not damper the spirit I'm having now. So, let's all take it from Mr Nat King Cole...

salam Shah,

this vinyl player, is it similar to the gramophone? sounds really classic, like the one in Bujang Lapok.

Its the vinyl that introduces me to good rock music. The transistor radio wasn't good enough.

Wa'alaikumusalam kerp,

In a way, yes. But gramophone is normally a stand alone technology dating back to late 18th century. Further, vinyl of then was as thick as they come and the needle, well, its more like the one you would use to sew a pair of jeans! lol! Serious.

Vinyl Long Plays of the 1950's and above are thinner with more refined sounds which allow the balancing of treble and bass sounds. Off course some say it sounds coarse compared to a cd, but that is a matter of opinion and taste. Personally like Cikgu, I prefer vinyl.

Salam Cikgu,

Back in 1976 or 77, your favourite banc, Rare Earth introduced the double album; how could you not like anything other than vinyl? :)

Only thing is that vinyl has 2 main weakness: scratch and warping. I gave my collection of a whole box to a friend back in 1990, and only a few were salvageable. Oh well...

Almost...like bein' in love...
Nat King Cole, one of my all time favourites... especially when he sings "All the Way"...
My big bros used to play them vinyls on a Grundig...theirs were more Brenda Lee, Connie Francis and Aneke Gronloh and NKC of course...my late sister's were all of Cliff Richard...my first vinyl was Lulu but my fave LP was Uriah Heep...come to think of it, i really hope those vinyls actually biodegraded!
Ooops, sorry...menyampuk lagi!

Salam bebee,

'All The Way'...had you not mentioned it, I would certainly have not remembered that song at all! Thank you :)

Hmm...Lulu and Uriah Heep? Wow! I mean they are like oceans apart! But hey, I believe you because I'm like that too. And don't worry about menyampok-ing, I like to do that too :)

Salam Shah:

Many said that Vinyl produced the best sound.

I am not at the priviledge of knowing it.

I have a turntable but unfortunately the amp had a stroke and no one in Melaka seem able to perform a bypass for the amp. Most suggest an amp transplant but as you know, an amp transplant can be as expensive as a heart transplant.
Sop the turntable just sat there in its ICU and UCMe state.

I have a album which I loved so much since my MU days. I got it in Ampang Park cica mid 80's by a Brazilian. None other he's Airto Moreira a n outstanding and brilliant percussionist. His best album was Touching You Touching Me. Thats the vinyl that I got. And to make it worst this album was not reproduced in CD format. If only someone could transfer this vinyl album into CD format...

Wa'alaikumusalam Doc,

Ok, next you are in KL, try to make it to the flea market in AmCorp Mall in Petaling Jaya. I think they are only open on Sundays and you can find just about anything of the past decades there, including turntables, amplifiers and even vinyl records, some of which are vintage classics! Perhaps someone there might be able to assist you.

On my end, I'll ask my friend if he's willing to transfer the LP into CD for you. I've heard of Airto Moreira but am not familiar with his works.
